11:20 am – IoT Enables The New Oil
In the Oil and Gas industry, predicting how assets and processes will behave is key to proactive maintenance and future productivity. Bridging the physical and virtual worlds, digital replicas of upstream, midstream and downstream asset ecosystem can help improve operations productivity, efficiency and safety. Implementing and maintaining a digital twin developed during asset construction (e.g., upgrades and changes at wells, pipelines, refineries) can improve overall asset management and performance. A digital twin can help predict by continuously learning and improving with new data, potential maintenance issues and optimizes operating parameters to elongate asset life and reduce downtime. Problems can be resolved quickly by drilling down into the digital twin to understand the issue and formulate a repair plan. What if analysis of a digital twin to understand and explain behaviors and predict future state not only optimizes uptime but also provide opportunity of new operating models and automation of end-to-end value chain processes. In addition, collaboratively with partners comparing performance across assets and executing root-cause analyses helps improve evidence-based asset management and continuous building of intelligent knowledge application. These benefits can be expanded across oil and gas process lifecycle by using a virtual reality-based digital twin and incorporating cognitive and artificial intelligence.

Machine-to-machine connectivity not only allows for direct increased productivity, and safety in the work force, it also presents an opportunity to “nudge” society into behavior that has positive benefits. This talk will discuss some of the data applications that connect planetary data sets via satellite systems to human performance, and interactions in the work place for oil and gas applications. The talk will dive further into use cases that can be applied for operators, and engineering service companies interested in understanding how to leverage IoT to improve safety, and productivity as it relates to the “nudge.”
